Michter’s
sons’ names, Michael and Peter. Though sadly, the distillery closed in 1989 due to bankruptcy. However, Michter’s prevails! Joseph Magliocco and Richard Newman joined forces, both men with a passion for whiskey. After filing for the abandoned Michter’s trademark, they planned to resurrect Michter’s in the heart of the modern American whiskey industry, Kentucky. Their current historic Fort Nelson site was first built in 1890 and purchased by Michter’s in 2012, after years of restoration the site opened to the public in February 2019. As well as their Fort Nelson site, the company owns Michter’s Shively Distillery in Louisville, as well as its 145-acre farm in Springfield, Kentucky.
Michter’s US*1 Sour Mash
Beautifully rich and spicy, this sour-mash whiskey from Michter’s has an abundance of cinnamon, butter and nutty notes, along with a hint of black pepper to freshen things up. Delicious.
Michter’s US*1 Kentucky Straight Rye
This single-barrel rye whiskey from Michter’s works a treat both neat and in cocktails. Peppery and spicy, this also displays refreshing orange notes, plus sweet toffee/butterscotch. Very moreish, very aromatic and fresh.
Michter’s US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Michter’s US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is made from a carefully selected mashbill that features the highest quality American corn. It is then matured to the peak of perfection. Truly “small batch” each batch of our US1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is batched in a holding tank sized to fit a maximum of twenty full barrels, leaving no margin for “blending out” imperfection and thus necessitating excellence from every barrel. Reflecting the spirit of the Bluegrass State, Michter’s US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is nuanced, mellow and earthy.Appealingly rich notes of barley sugar, raisins and dried fruit, on the nose, with a balancing touch of fennel seed and baked bread.The palate is rich and spicy, with juicy fruit, cinnamon and clean, well-defined flavours. Finishing off with a welcoming kick of black pepper, then the dried fruit stays strong.
Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye
While the Michter’s team distills according to tried and true Kentucky practices, it continually experiments as it pursues Michter’s goal of making the greatest American whiskeys. Following years of research on different barrel finishes for rye whiskey, this release came up: Michter’s US1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye. The result is a unique rye whiskey. The strength of the majority of the barrels selected for the 2020 release ranges from 107.2 to 111.2 proof.
